Open source on solid ground.

Basalt is the rock beneath almost everything: the ocean floor, roads and pavements, and, over time, some of the most fertile soil there is. OpenBasalt builds open infrastructure software in the same spirit.

Principles

Three ideas came from the rock.

When basalt cools slowly it splits by itself into hexagonal columns: independent pieces that together make solid ground. That is what we want our software to be.

  1. Foundation

Infrastructure tools that everything else stands on: directory, DNS, security, the system itself. Things nobody notices while they work.

  2. Columns

Independent projects, each with its own purpose and release cycle, that fit together like basalt's hexagonal columns.

  3. Fertile soil

Weathered basalt becomes some of the most fertile soil there is. Open code, exposed to time and people, becomes ground for others to grow.

Open, because everything here is open. Basalt, because it is the base.
